ST. PAUL`S CATHEDRAL
Built between 1839 and 1847, St Paul`s Cathedral is one
of India`s most important churches. It`s east of the Victoria
Memorial at the South end of the Maidan. The steeple fell
during an earthquake in 1897 and was redesigned and rebuilt.
Inside there`s some interesting memorials and stained
glass, including the west window by Sir Edward Burne-Jones.
It`s open to visitors from 9 am to noon, and from 3 to
6 pm. Sunday services are at 7.30 and 8.30 am, and 6 pm.
VICTORIA MEMORIAL
The Victoria Memorial in Calcutta is a wonderful example
of the western style of architecture. The monument, built
by Lord Curzon, the erstwhile Viceroy of British India,
not only pays homage to a legendary British monarch but
also reflects the memories of the British rule in India.
The museum within the Victoria Memorial, houses one of
the best collection of artifacts to be found in any museum
in India.
KHANDAGIRI
& UDAYAGIRI (JAIN HERITAGE)
The twin hills of Khandagiri & Udayagiri, 8 km from
Bhubaneswar, served as the site of an ancient Jain monastery
which was carved into cave like chambers in the face of
the hill. Dating back to the 2nd century BC, some of the
caves have beautiful carvings. The Rani Gumpha ( Queen`s
Cave), one of the largest and double- storied is ornately
embellished with beautiful carvings. In the Hati Gumpha
(Elephant Cave), King Kharavela has carved out the chronicles
of his reign.
LINGARAJA
TEMPLE
The Lingaraja temple is said to have been built first
by the ruler Yayati Kesari in the 7th century who shifted
his capital from Jaipur to Bhubaneshwar. Bhubaneshwar
remained as the Kesari capital, till Nripati Kesari founded
Cuttck in the 10th century. Inscriptions from the period
of the Kalinga King Anangabhima III from the 13th century
are seen here.
SUN
TEMPLE
Sun temple is one of the most popular tourist attractions
of Konark. The credit for constructing this 13th century
old shrine, dedicated to Sun God, goes to Raja Narsimhadeva
of the Ganga dynasty. Konark Sun Temple has been built
in the form of a gigantic chariot that has 24 wheels.
JAGANNATH TEMPLE
Jagannath Temple is one of the most renowned as well as
the biggest temples of Orissa. Established in the 12th
century, the temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath (Lord
Krishna), Lord of the Universe. The credit for laying
the foundation of the Jagannath temple of Puri goes to
Raja Ananta Varman Chodaganga Devi. |
