Full day sightseeing of Old and New Delhi

DELHI: The capital city of Independent India is often the starting point of a visit to India. Like Rome it is an eternal city and is a name with music in it for most of the people. For Indians it is the capital of their country, the centre of power and cultural; for the simple villager it is identified as the home of Panditji, as Mr. Nehru was affectionately known. For foreigners who have read of it in their newspaper and seen on their television, it is a strange, and sometimes puzzling blend of ancient and modern, of pageantry and socialistic planning.

There are today two Delhis: Old Delhi - the city built by Shahjahan the man who built the Taj Mahal and New Delhi - built by the British in 1931. It is this juxtaposition of the Old and the new one which is one of the attractions of the capital. While the Old Delhi evokes a distinctly oriental atmosphere, New Delhi has wide avenues and imposing office buildings. Both the cities with monuments and mosques that can keep any tourist happy for days.

Proceed in the morning to visit Old Delhi driving through Ferozshah Kotla, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, Lakshmi Narayan Temple and visit Rajghat. This simple square platform of Black Marble on the banks of the River Yamuna marks the place where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated. A large number of masons and stone carvers worked hard on an area that was over two miles long and a mile wide; they used brilliant red sandstone available locally, which provides the buildings with much of their luster. The fort dates back to the 11th century when it was a vital citadel for the control of central India. In 1981 Ranthambore was awarded National Park status and though overrun by vegetation, remnants of the summer palaces, temples and guard stones within the fort still remain.

Ranthambore is famous for its tigers and is a favorite with photographers. It is known as Kuttanad – “the land of the short people”, a reference perhaps, to the sight of the men and women-working knee deep in paddy fields. For centuries, the waterways provided an efficient, peaceful transport system, for the local farmers and inhabitants. Foreign invaders, too, appreciated their importance as trade and communication arteries, and built a number of settlements along the riverbanks. Today, coconuts and peppers are still carried in country boats, newspapers are delivered by skiff, and children go to school by ferry. The scene is idyllic and the mood dreamlike.
